Questions we are asked most
- Is HVHZ product really required in Broward?
- Yes. Miami-Dade and Broward are the High Velocity Hurricane Zone. Product needs a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance, tested to large missile impact and cyclic pressure loading. A quote naming statewide Florida Product Approval was written for a different county.
- Why is my quote higher than a friend's in Orlando?
- Because the approval regime is different and HVHZ product costs more. A Broward job is genuinely more expensive than the same house in central Florida. If a Broward price matches an Orlando one, ask which approval the product carries.
- Do I need the same rating on every opening?
- No. Design pressure varies with height, exposure, position on the elevation and the size of the unit. Each opening should be approved for its own number. Applying the highest rating everywhere is a common way to overspend.
- Should the garage door be included?
- Usually it should be first. It is the largest opening in the envelope, and a failure there pressurises the building and lifts the roof deck. Doing every window and leaving the garage inverts the priority.
- Can arched and corner openings be done in impact?
- Shapes generally can, with a narrower product field and longer lead times. Frameless corner glass without a structural mullion sometimes genuinely cannot at HVHZ pressures — we will say so at the measure rather than after a deposit.
- What if my frames are still good?
- Then retrofit glazing may be the better job — less disruption, lower cost, same protection where the approval covers that frame type. Contractors rarely raise it unprompted, since replacing everything is the larger sale.
- Do you subcontract the installation?
- No. Our own crews install and finish. Where a job needs an engineer or structural work we bring in the right person for it and tell you that is what is happening.
- How far ahead should I book?
- Earlier than most people expect. Specialty and shaped units have the longest lead times and they set the programme more than our diary does.
