A waterfront installation faces two separate demands. The first is pressure, which is higher because exposure is higher. The second is corrosion, which acts on fasteners, hardware and finishes continuously for the life of the installation. A specification that satisfies the first and ignores the second gives you a compliant window with seized hardware and failing fasteners in a few years — and the failure is at the anchoring, which is the part that matters.

Why the finger canals matter as much as the ocean

Owners of ocean-facing houses generally know they are exposed. Owners on the finger canals behind them often assume they are sheltered, and on wind they largely are. On salt they are not — the air carries it well inland, and canal-side houses show the same corrosion behaviour as oceanfront ones.

The practical consequence is that fastener and hardware specification should follow the salt exposure rather than the wind exposure, and those two do not map onto each other. It is a small cost difference at installation and a large one over the life of the job.

Is there a finish that lasts better near salt?
